What can we do to preserve the Great Barrier Reef's marine life, coral systems and natural beauty?
I heard that the GBR is slowly disappearing and will be nothing more than a skeleton of itself by the year 2030. I do not want this to happen, and I know many people want to see and experience it for generations to come.
For those that have been to the GBR many times, is it really getting worse and worse as they say it is? Is the GBR really disappearing, and loosing its natural beauty, marine life and abundant coral systems?
And what are the best ways to preserve it so my kids can enjoy it and be in awe of it, like snorkelers and divers have in the past?
The GBR is the largest and most abundant marine eco-system in the world. It is a natural and physical treasure. We need to do our best to stop or at best, slow down its deterioration.
What can we do to preserve it?
I agree about sugar cane farmers. Global warming is very bad and it's the main threat to GBR. Corals only tolerate certain water temperatures and too high temperatures kill their vital bacteria, zooxanthellae, which causes coral bleaching. So anything you can do to save energy is good, turn your lights off if they dont need to be on in the whole house and things like that. Also, because different species in an ecosystem depend on each other for food and protection, you could think about every species separately. Littering is very bad. Plastic bags ending up in the ocean for example kill turtles because they eat jellyfish and mistake plastic bags for jellyfish. If the numbers of turtles decrease, jellyfish become more abundant and that affects other species in the food web. Overfishing, or people who don't respect size limits when fishing, is very bad. Tropical cyclones also destroy coral reef, that's again connected to global warming - the warmer it gets the more, and the stronger will be the cyclones. Bottom line is that anything you can do to have an environmentally friendly lifestyle will help directly or indirectly. I wish everyone cared.
